LivHub Chatroulette alternative
A Chatroulette alternative, fifteen years into the format
Chatroulette invented this — a stranger, a camera, and a button that replaces them. That part has not been improved on and probably cannot be. What has changed since 2009 is everything around it.
What actually moved in fifteen years
- Then
The spin was the whole product
In 2009 the novelty was that a stranger appeared at all. Nobody had expectations about who, and nobody had built the tooling to do anything about it. The format was invented before the problems it creates were understood.
- Since
Everyone learned the same lessons
Age assurance, reporting that goes somewhere, and a one-tap exit are not features any of these sites shipped on day one. They exist because fifteen years of this format showed exactly where it goes wrong when they are missing.
- Now
The spin is table stakes; the handling is the product
Every site in this category pairs strangers. The interesting question is no longer whether it does that — it is what happens in the ten seconds after something goes wrong, and that is where they actually differ.
Side by side
Two rows below say "their site says" rather than giving you a number. That is deliberate: a policy we have not read is not ours to summarise, and a comparison built on assumptions about the other side is worth less than no comparison at all.
| Chatroulette | LivHub | |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2009 — it started this category | Newer, and building on what the category learned |
| Form | Browser | Browser |
| Who it pairs | Anyone who lands on it | Adults only, and the check happens before your first match |
| Moderation, as described | Their site says automated review | People read the reports, and an account that keeps drawing them stops being matched |
| When you are asked your age | Their site is the place to check | Once per device, ahead of the first call |
| Where the money starts | Their site is the place to check | After a free opening stretch, per minute from your balance — shown on screen first |
Automated review and human review are not rivals
Automated filtering catches volume — it is fast, it never sleeps, and it is the only way to handle the obvious cases at any scale. What it is poor at is context: the conversation that is technically fine and clearly wrong, the pattern that only looks like a pattern across several reports.
That second category is the one that decides whether a site is pleasant to be on, and it is why reports here reach people. It is slower. It is also much harder to work around, which is the point.
Questions
What is Chatroulette?
The site that started random video chat, launched in 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy. It pairs two strangers for a live video conversation in a browser. It is still running and describes itself as the original free random video chat, moderated with automated review.
What is a good Chatroulette alternative?
Any browser-based site that pairs you one-to-one with no install — that is the format. What to compare is not the spin, which is identical everywhere, but where the age check sits, whether a report reaches a person, and whether costs are visible before they apply.
How is this different?
Two things we would point at. Age is confirmed once per device before your first call rather than assumed. And reports are read by people, with accounts that keep collecting them losing the ability to be matched — a slower process than an automated filter, and a harder one to talk your way around.
Is it free?
Opening it costs nothing and every call opens with a free stretch. Once that runs out the call bills by the minute against your balance, which the screen flags on its way there rather than afterwards.
Do I need an account?
No. Nothing between you and a live conversation. Registering only becomes relevant if you want someone to be able to reach you again later.
Is random video chat still worth using in 2026?
If what you want is an unplanned conversation with someone who has no idea who you are, nothing has replaced it — and every profile-based app is, by design, the opposite of that. The format survived fifteen years of being declared dead for a reason.
